More Commonplace Entries

...continuing to make progress in my commonplace book...sometimes the pages seem to get pretty busy but I like them anyway (they feel "alive" to me) and so I persist...I'd like to fill my journal with 50 of my favorite quotes but it remains to be seen if the spiral bound journal I'm working in can handle so many pages, especially ones so loaded with cutouts and images. I'm definitely considering getting color copies of each page at 50% and then binding them together to use as gifts...

...this page is one of
my very favorite...the colors, images and placement all work together so well for me...and I am very partial to Asian imagery and philosophic ponderings...

What a Hoot

I'm still wandering all over the place in the studio but there is a definitely common thread running through the eclectic mix of work: PLAY! Little bit of this, little bit of that, just doing whatever tickles my fancy in the moment...finished this piece a couple days back...a canvas just for me but also a test case for a couple of new series that are brewing in my brain...

Here's a close-up of my three little owls who now stand watch over my art-making...

The moon is a photograph that I glazed over to incorporate into my background, the tree limb is formed from molding paste, and the owls are separate painted pieces I attached once everything else was complete. The Chinese symbol in the lower right corner means "moon." Lot of work but way too much fun! It is great to see some of my cartooning come to life.

Soul Terrain

This painting is in response to a post at Kelly's marvelous blog Soul Humming that asked readers to examine the terrain of their inner landscape. After some careful observations through my soul binoculars, this painting was the result. It is also the first work I've done at the easel since my surgery...

The Play's the Thing

"Paintings become the playground of mixtures and solutions coming together to daydream about the soul." - Carlos Rodriguez Amadeo

So this must be what it's like to be fully engaged in the artist's life: things other than art fall away out of sight as the urge to create, create, create rises up and consumes one's time and thoughts...poor, poor blog...in my passion for art-making and art teaching, you are oft neglected...one of these days, I'll figure out how to do it all.

I've been busy exploring all different sorts of avenues in the studio...partly because I keep my new hand going by constantly changing what it is doing so it doesn't tire out on any one task...it lasts about 15 to 20 minutes in one position before getting painful and crampy so I need to adjust my activities frequently...a little bit of typing...some painting...some collage...some writing....a little bit of everything here and there. Also, in my downtime immediately after the surgery, I brainstormed a ton of new ideas and projects and I am having grand fun seeing that storm to fruition.

Of course, I've done some journaling...

And I've been practicing faces with Kelly Rae Robert's book Taking Flight as my guide. I have a ton of cartoon images I'd like to learn to translate into paintings...working on getting the shading just right....

And I've been playing with abstract painting and all the Golden products I've accumulated...

The abstracts are really tugging at my brain (not as easy as you'd think...) but I adore creating them as the "rules" are quite loose, perhaps even non-existent. I wish I could settle on a theme/style/technique as I have some upcoming shows that could definitely use inventory waiting in the wings...for now, however, I'm just enjoying the playtime...
